The Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST) in Kashmir is embarking on an exciting research project aimed at enhancing the nutritional content of hydroponically grown tomatoes and lettuce. The project, titled “Biofortification of hydroponically grown tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) and lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) with thiamine and zinc alone or in combination and their validation in animal counterpart,” is funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology, DST New Delhi.

The focal point of this three-year project is the cultivation of tomatoes and lettuce through hydroponics, a soilless cultivation method. Researchers at SKUAST Kashmir will be specifically focusing on fortifying these crops with thiamine and zinc, either individually or in combination. Thiamine, also known as Vitamin B1, plays a crucial role in energy metabolism, while zinc is essential for various physiological functions, including immune system support.

The ultimate goal of this endeavor is to create crops with heightened nutritional value, contributing to a healthier and more balanced diet for consumers. The research is not only significant for addressing nutritional deficiencies but also aligns with broader agricultural innovations.

The significance of this research extends beyond academic realms, as it addresses real-world challenges related to food security and nutrition. As SKUAST Kashmir takes on the task of biofortifying hydroponically grown crops, the outcomes have the potential to contribute substantially to the well-being of communities and the agricultural landscape at large. Stay tuned for updates on this innovative venture as SKUAST Kashmir paves the way for a more nourished and sustainable future.
